Summer Skincare Tips

Those of us who are fortunate enough to live in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County have so much to be grateful for, especially in the summer. We are surrounded by water. We spend our time at the ocean, on our boat, at the pool, walking around taking in all of the beauty our county has to offer. But there is one thing that cannot be ignored, and that is consciously protecting and caring for our skin during these delightful summer months. The complaints that we have about our skin, laxity, rough texture, brown spots, wrinkles, dullness, blemishes etc., can all be blamed for a large part on photo-aging, or the side effects of sun exposure. Continuous exfoliation, amped-up hydration, and sun protection are the key elements to summer skin care. Let’s break it down:

Exfoliation: The surface layer of dead skin cells clog pores, causing excess oil (blackheads) and can build up causing skin to look dry and dull. Getting rid of that layer of dead cells in a consistent manner results in healthy, vibrant looking skin.

Hydration: Once the top layer of dead cells is removed, providing nutritious hydration to the new cells keeps the skin soft, supple and glowing. Hydration is essential for the skin and for the body from the inside and out. A moisturizer appropriate for your skin type and an increase in water intake keeps skin looking young.

Sun Protection Factor (SPF): Probably the most important step in keeping skin young and preventing skin cancers is the appropriate use of SPF. The number on the SPF refers to the amount of time you can be exposed to summer sun while staying protected from the damaging UVA/UVB rays. UVA rays effect the dermis, the lower, functioning part of the skin where the most damage is done. This damage has no warning signs, unlike a sunburn in the epidermis that is associated with UVB rays. Think of it this way : UVA, aging rays, UVB, burning rays. UVA rays are prevalent even on cloudy days, which is why a SPF is necessary every day. A product that contains broad-spectrum protection prevents damage from UVA/UVB rays.

Anti-Oxidant Protection: Antioxidants are one of the most powerful anti-aging

ingredients because they can intercept or block free-radical damage caused by the sun, pollution, and the very air we breathe, as oxygen also causes free-radical damage. Skin care products such as Vitamin A, C, and E, as well as a diet rich in anti-oxidants are your added defenses in skin protection.
